Frequently asked questions
About the system
I am new to gardening, is the shelf beginner friendly?
Yes. HomeGrown shelves are designed to make growing simple, even if you have no gardening experience. The built-in lights, water-based system, and easy planting setup help you grow herbs and greens indoors without needing soil, outdoor space, or advanced plant knowledge.
How often should I refill the water?
This depends on what you are growing and how mature the plants are, but most users refill the water around once every 1–2 weeks. Larger, faster-growing plants may drink more water, so we recommend checking the tank regularly.
Do you handle setting up the shelf?
Yes. We can deliver and help set up your HomeGrown shelf so it is ready to use. We will also walk you through the basics, including how to add water, nutrients, seeds, and grow sponges.
Does it fit in an apartment?
Yes. The shelf is designed for indoor spaces and works well in apartments, kitchens, living areas, offices, and balconies with shade. You do not need a garden or outdoor space to start growing.
How much can you grow at once?
The shelf has 90 growing slots, giving you plenty of space to start seedlings and grow a variety of herbs, leafy greens, and edible plants.
As plants grow larger, we recommend spacing them out so they have enough room to thrive. Most customers keep around 45 mature plants on the shelf at one time, depending on the varieties they are growing.
Where can I get seeds and grow sponges?
You can find seeds, grow sponges, and growing essentials through HomeGrown. We also offer accessories and refills to help you keep your shelf growing over time.
What plants can I grow?
You can grow a wide range of herbs, leafy greens, and compact edible plants, including basil, mint, parsley, coriander, lettuce, rocket, kale, pak choi, chillies, cherry tomatoes, and strawberries.
The shelf is best suited for herbs, greens, and smaller fruiting plants. Larger plants may need more spacing, pruning, and care as they grow.
About your purchases
What is the return policy?
We want you to feel confident trying HomeGrown, especially if indoor growing is new to you. That’s why we offer a 90-Day HomeGrown Confidence Promise.
If you try the shelf and decide it is not the right fit for your home, you may be eligible for a partial refund within 90 days of delivery, provided the shelf is returned complete, working, reasonably clean, and free from damage or misuse.
Refunds are calculated from the product price:
- Within 30 days: up to 70% refund
- 31–60 days: up to 60% refund
- 61–90 days: up to 50% refund
Standard delivery and installation are included with your purchase. The partial refund structure is designed to account for delivery, setup, support, collection, inspection, and redeployment costs.
Before approving a return, our team will first help troubleshoot your setup, including water level, nutrients, lighting, plant spacing, and general care. The Confidence Promise is designed for customers who genuinely feel the shelf is not the right fit, and does not cover misuse, lack of maintenance, missing parts, damage, or normal plant-growing issues.
Your HomeGrown shelf also includes a 12-month hardware warranty covering manufacturing faults in the grow lights, pump, power adapter, structure, and electrical components. The warranty does not cover plants, seedlings, nutrients, sponges, consumables, damage from incorrect use, poor maintenance, water damage caused by misuse, or general growing results.
If a hardware fault occurs, we will first troubleshoot the issue and, where needed, repair or replace the faulty part or unit.
Do you provide payment plans?
Yes. We offer payment plans through Tabby at checkout, subject to availability and approval.
This makes it easier to bring HomeGrown into your home while spreading the cost over time in simple instalments.
When will I get my order?
Orders are usually delivered within the UAE within 2 working days, depending on your location and product availability.
Once your order is confirmed, our team will contact you to arrange delivery and, where applicable, setup.
Where can I get refills?

We recommend keeping a few refills on hand so you can continue planting and harvesting without interruption.

About your plants
How long do plants take to grow?
Most herbs and leafy greens begin to sprout within a few days and can usually be harvested within 3–6 weeks, depending on the plant variety and growing conditions.
Fast-growing greens like lettuce, rocket, and pak choi are usually ready sooner, while chillies, cherry tomatoes, and strawberries will take longer to mature as they have to produce flowers and then fruits.
How often should I add nutrients?
We recommend adding nutrients every time you refill the water tank.
As a general guide, add 5ml of Nutrient A and 5ml of Nutrient B for every 1 litre of water added. This helps keep your plants healthy and gives them the food they need to grow properly.
What are some easy plants to start with?
Some of the easiest plants to start with are basil, mint, coriander, parsley, lettuce, rocket, pak choi, and kale.
These plants are beginner-friendly, grow well indoors, and are easy to use in everyday cooking.
What plants can I grow in the system?
You can grow a wide range of herbs, leafy greens, and compact edible plants, including basil, mint, parsley, coriander, lettuce, rocket, kale, pak choi, chillies, cherry tomatoes, and strawberries.
The system is best suited for herbs, greens, and smaller fruiting plants. Larger plants may need more spacing, pruning, and care as they grow.
How often should I replace my existing plants?
This depends on what you are growing and how often you harvest.
Leafy greens are usually best replaced after a few harvests, once they start slowing down or becoming less fresh. Herbs can often last longer if they are trimmed regularly, while fruiting plants like chillies, cherry tomatoes, and strawberries may stay in the system for several months with the right care.
A good rule is to replace plants when they stop growing well, become too large, or no longer look healthy.
